Vayyeze: The Image of God in all

This Shabbat we both read Parashat VaYetze and commemorate International Human Rights Day. There is a great human rights lesson in the words of Yaacov who, after waking up from his dream of the angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven, exclaims, “Surely God is in this place, and I did not know it.” We believe that the Image of God is in every human being, and all to often we do not recognize it. Would that we develop the spiritual vision to perceive that Image and the spiritual ability to honor it. In this week’s parasha we also see that Jacob the trickster and deceiver is himself tricked and deceived. Not only are there serious moral questions regarding Yaacov’s treatment of his brother, but eventually Yaacov pays a heavy price. Not only were there serious moral questions regarding Israeli human rights abuses during the Oslo years, but these abuses helped lead to the second intifada. May we have the spiritual vision and ability to sense the Image of God in all, and thereby avoiding bringing suffering both on others and on ourselves.
