Shavuot: A world based on righteousness, justice, goodness, mercy and faithfulness.

Shavuot: A world based on righteousness, justice, goodness, mercy and faithfulness.

On Shavuot we read the Book of Ruth. Set upon the background of the barley and wheat harvests literally taking place as we speak, the story focuses on the relationship between Ruth and Boaz (more hierarchical) and the incredible love between Ruth and Naomi (much less hierarchical). However, what is significant about both relationships is the acceptance of Ruth by those who could so easily have rejected her as the foreign Moabitess who must not be allowed into our society. For all of the problematic imagery in the Hosea, God commands Hosea just before the section we read to marry a harlot. This on the one hand is God’s way of demonstrating how God sees the relationship between God and the Children of Israel, but is also a way of reaching out.

If we are to solve the ills of poverty, hatred, war and racism in our society, we must begin by reaching out to the ones we would normally turn away. The relationship between us and the poorest and weakest Israelis and with Palestinians is all too often hierarchical. However, we are also interdependent in more ways than I can spell out here. I believe that wholeness and peace and the redemption that is to come from a descendent of Boaz and Ruth will come about when we find away of entering in a covenantal relationship with God, humanity and the rest of the natural world based on righteousness, justice, goodness, mercy and faithfulness.
