RHR helps families access burial plots

The following is a thank you letter from a family RHR helped in to bury one of their members.

As you can see, the man died in Sheikh Saed, but he was a resident of Jabel Mukaber (Sheikh Saed is a neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber although it does not belong to Jerusalem and Jabel Mukaber does) and had an Israeli ID, so the family needed a special permit to bring him and bury him in Jabel Mukaber.

“I really believe that if Omar knew or had any idea that his body won’t be able to cross the Sheik Saed point to be laid to rest, he would not have made that last wish. You see Omar who has been suffering from cancer for a very long time, had always this big huge smile on his face and he always had something nice to say to you. Omar was dismissed from Hadassah a few weeks ago and the doctors told his family to take him home as he is living his last days. Omar had one dying wish, to die in his house in the Shiek Saed neighborhood and not in the one in Jabal Mukaber. Maybe the place in sheik sad had a special memory in his heart, who knows? Anyway last night Omar also known as Abu Raed, passed away at 10.00 p.m. Of course a doctor came to certify his death and a death certificate was issued. When his family took the body to bury in the only cemetery the village has which is in Jabal Mukaber the soldiers at the sheik sad checkpoint did not allow them to enter. Why? The deceased has an Israeli ID and he needs a special permit. What permit and from where can one get this permit who knows. But I am quite sure that if Omar knew this was going to happen he would not have chosen to die in the sheik sad (one of the neighborhoods in Jabal Mukaber) but in his house in Jabal Mukaber. If only he knew that to be buried so many people have to make so many calls to arrange for his burial, he would not have gone to his house in Shiek Saed, why? Because he was a calm peaceful man who lived his life peacefully and who never thought of troubling anyone; now we all know do not die inside the sheik sad neighborhood because it will be hard to be buried.

On behalf of his family I would like to thank Anat from Mahsoom watch, Hillel Bardin and Rabbis for Human Rights who did their best today to help the family bury the deceased”
