The Rabbis for Human Rights Yeshiva
A program combining weekly study and volunteer fieldwork for Israeli University students promoting Jewish values in defense of human rights
objectives
"..The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good
understanding have all they who do his commandments.." Psalms
111:10
The
RHR Yeshiva is based on “na’aseh v’nishma”, both deeds
and learning. Through its study and volunteer components, the program:
- Educates and encourages members of a new generation of Israeli students
toward leadership and involvement in defending human rights and working for
social and economic justice as part of their identity as Israelis and as Jews.
- Gives participants an intellectual and textual basis in those Jewish values
underlying Israeli and international human rights law. By studying aggadic,
halachic, and philosophic sources, the participants come to identify with
the Jewish tradition’s respect for the “Other” and develop
a passion for the pursuit of justice.
- Provides participants with a ‘hands-on’ opportunity to learn
the needs, skills, and complications of work to resolve issues of social justice
and human rights violation. Participants work on human rights projects or
volunteer for an organization dealing with an issue addressed in the program’s
study component.
- Collects, organizes, teaches, and publishes materials that educate Jewishly
toward respect for human rights in Israel and the world. These materials help
RHR use the Jewish tradition as a source for inspiration in building a nation
and society based on the values of pursuing justice, Tikkun haOlam, and concern
for the ‘widow, orphan, and stranger’ and others of desperate
need in society.
