The Rabbis for Human Rights Yeshiva

A program combining weekly study and volunteer fieldwork for Israeli University students promoting Jewish values in defense of human rights

community service

"..The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they who do his commandments.."
Psalms 111:10

Students are required to volunteer three hours each week in addition to the study component of the program.

Several students volunteer with RHR, working on its various projects. Other students volunteer with organizations working in the fields of human rights or social justice. A partial list of organizations involved includes:

“The Worker’s Hotline”, which helps foreign laborers and other workers secure their legal rights; the “Bimkom” organization of Building Planners for Planning Rights, which deals with a wide range of issues connected to city planning, building permits, and the public’s role in the development of its landscape; a number of organizations in the various coalitions seeking agunot rights and fighting unemployment, trafficking of women, home demolitions, and more.

RHR works in conjunction with Hebrew University’s Beit Hillel and other university and student organizations to create special projects to which students devote their required volunteer time. These projects focus on community organization on the grassroots level in impoverished neighborhoods and mobilization of the student population for social justice activities both on and off campus.
