Professor Aviezer Ravitzky is seriously injured

Professor Aviezer RavitzkyHuman Rights activist and Hebrew University Professor Aviezer Ravitzky was hit by a bus and seriously injured in central Jerusalem on Monday October 16, 2006 while crossing the street at a crosswalk near the intersection of Rehov HaTurim and Jaffa Road between the Macheneh Yehudah Market and the Jerusalem Bus Station.

Ravitzky, 61, was rushed to Hadassah-University Hospital at Ein Kerem, where he was treated in the intensive care unit for massive head injuries.

He was later listed in serious but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Professor Aviezer Ravitzky is the Sol Rosenblum Chair of Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A distinguished scholar and author, he was honored in 2001 with Israel’s most prestigious award, The Israel Prize, for his research in Jewish Thought. Dr. Ravitzky is a Senior Fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute, responsible for research on religion and the state and is among the founders of the Orthodox peace organizations Oz V’Shalom and Netivot Shalom. Ravitzky, one of Israel’s most respected philosophers and thinkers, often spoke at workshops and conferences organized by Rabbis for Human Rights, and addresses the Rabbinical Human Rights fact finding missions that RHR facilitates.

Professor Ravitzky is scheduled to be the Scholar-in-Residence at the First North American Rabbinic Conference on Judaism & Human Rights, facilitated by Rabbis for Human Rights - North America.

Ravitzky is the author of several books including Messianism, Zionism and Jewish Religious Radicalism, History and Faith: Studies in Jewish Philosophy and, most recently, Religious and Secular Jews in Israel: A post-Zionist.

Ravitzky has served as a visiting professor at various universities in the United States, including Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Rice University, Yeshiva University, Brown University and the Jewish Theological Seminary.
