Pequde: Maintaining our belief in the goodness of people.

In this weeks Parasha we read about the clothes of the High Priest, including the Hoshen (12 stones breastplate). This symbolizes that the Priest always has to have the entire people of Israel at his heart at all times. Just a few weeks ago, in Parashat Ki Tisa, we learned that, at the instance of the Golden Calf, God wanted to destroy the people and make a new people starting with Moshe. As angry as he was himself, Moshe advocated on the behalf of the people.

We who deal with the deepest darkest most problematic aspects of our society in advocating for human rights, must like Moshe and Aharon must always remember to do it out of the Ahavat Israel (love of Israel). As critical as we are, we shouldn’t despair and give up the hope for people to change, and as difficult as it is we must always maintain our belief in the goodness of people.
