Economic and Social Justice

כל מי שאפשר למחות לאנשי ביתו ולא מיחה נתפס על אנשי ביתו באנשי עירו נתפס על אנשי עירו בכל העולם כולו נתפס על כל העולם כולו

שבת נד ע”ב

“Whoever is able to protest against transgressors within their own family, community, or even the entire world, and yet fails to do so, that person is punished for the transgressions of their family, their community, or of the entire world.”

BT Shabbat 54b

The biblical prophets were roused to fury by the economic injustices leveled against the poor and defenseless, and Jewish tradition roots the idea of helping society’s needy in “tzedaka”, justice. As the social gap, hunger, poverty and unemployment in Israel grow, Rabbis for Human Rights works at the grassroots level to organize local communities in their struggle for just economic policies; lobbies in the Knesset to ensure adequate budgetary allocations for the needy; and helps increase public awareness of the plight of the poor while stressing society’s responsibility toward them in light of the Jewish tradition.

Rabbis for Human Rights is the leading force in a coalition to protect the rights of the unemployed, rights threatened by a plan entitled Mehalev, modeled on the “Wisconsin workfare plan.” Rabbis for Human Rights’s program includes the establishment of local information centers, and grass roots community self-empowerment activities. Rabbis for Human Rights carefully monitors the activities of those companies contracted by the government to implement Mehalev. Rabbis for Human Rights also sponsors a project to raise funds at marriage, bar/bat mitzvah, and other celebrations to purchase food for the poor.

Rabbis for Human Rights provides education materials that emphasize Jewish economic justice values and describe models for community action. Together with its coalition partners, Rabbis for Human Rights supports protest efforts of the unemployed and underemployed, single parents, the elderly, the handicapped, and others with urgent needs who fall through society’s safety net. Rabbis for Human Rights uses its singular voice as a rabbinical organization to unify Israeli society’s disparate groups behind a vision of justice and Jewish community values in their common struggle for economic justice.
